The anthology has been put together in connection with the Exhibition Copenhagen – Gateway to Europe (1996) – a collaboration between three neighbor institutions domiciled on Slotsholmen – the center for the political power in Denmark. The emphasis here is on the few central political and cultural issues and long lines is drawn to describe power, politics and culture in Denmark. Copenhagen’s role as a gateway is as always undergoing changes. The anthology includes chapters on issues like these: An experiment in freedom of the press in Copenhagen in 1770s, Body Culture, women’s liberation, protest and innovation of the labor movement , cultural radicalism and the youth revolt.
